PFAS Lab Testing, Analysis,
and Consulting

The EPA’s PFAS Roadmap includes strict guidelines for testing, monitoring, and remediation. More than a dozen US states have issued guidelines and notifications related to PFAS, and the list continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical for any organization impacted by current or coming regulations to develop a strategy that addresses all potential concerns over PFAS exposure.

At RJ Lee Group, we know that science informs strategy, and our team of experts helps address the four key areas of a successful PFAS strategy:

    • Assessment

      • Sample collection
      • Laboratory analysis
      • Data review
    • Risk

      • Systemic (chronic exposure)
      • Event-driven (acute exposures)
      • Toxicological issues
    • Remediation

      • Methods (cost vs. effectiveness)
      • Background levels
    • Process

      • PFAS sourcing in the supply chain
      • Exposure profiles

A PFAS primer

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are used in a wide variety of industrial and consumer products including food packaging, cookware, fabrics, personal care products, and firefighting foams to provide resistance to water, oil, grease, and heat. Often called “forever chemicals” because PFAS do not easily break down.

Research into the health effects of PFAS exposure is ongoing, but studies indicate a possible link to health issues such as cancer, high cholesterol, liver damage, and thyroid disease. The Department of Defense is phasing out its use, the US EPA has both proposed strict drinking water regulations, and several states have banned its use in consumer goods. Get ready for current and proposed regulations with our PFAS primer.

Targeted Analysis with LC-MS/MS

Testing for the presence of PFAS in air, soil, or water to comply with current and proposed regulations is challenging because permissible limits are as low as .004 parts per trillion. That equates to trying to find 4 drops of water in over 13 billion gallons of water, or 20,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

RJ Lee Group utilizes state-of-the-art Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometer/Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) technology to analyze samples for PFAS constituents following several established methods including:

  • EPA 533
  • EPA 537 Rev. 1.1
  • ASTM D7979 with Isotopic Dilution
  • ASTM D7968-17

These are targeted methods for determining concentrations of specific PFAS compounds, such as PFOA and PFOS, though over 20 PFAS chemicals can be targeted.

PFAS is an Emerging Contaminant of Interest for Air Quality

PFAS in the atmosphere can be carried long distances before deposition onto land and water.

RJ Lee Group offers sampling for PFAS in the air, performed on solid media, with analysis performed using the LC-MS/MS test methods.
